Kingston's business district is looking for a $45,000 upgrade. So what do their citizens want to see?

Some might say benches, art or landscaping, but Carla Bridges has a different idea.

"Recycling mattresses," Bridges said.

A resident of Kingston for 10 years, she says she'd like to see the city incubate a business that would make use of the city's garbage, such as the many mattresses laying around.

"I've heard, in other counties, they have it where you recycle the mattress and you can use that wool or whatever on the mattress. I think that makes a good business," Bridges said.

Michael Briglia, the owner of Michael's Candy Corner in Midtown, has a simpler idea.

"To improve sidewalks would be a wonderful idea," Briglia said.

He says that he understands that families with strollers or people in wheelchairs just won't go certain places because of the sidewalks.

"Accidents happen when you're pushing the envelope by being out there. No one wants to get into an accident. I think that would be money well spent," Briglia said.

This initiative was created using the money from off-street parking fees that the city began implementing a little less than a year ago. Each of Kingston's three business areas -- Uptown, Midtown and Downtown -- are splitting the $45,000 pool for a total budget of $15,000 for each section to use.

Citizens of Kingston can submit ideas through an online survey, through a proposal sent to city hall or sharing them at one of the three community visioning sessions that begin this week. The city is going to conduct cost estimates for each project and launch a poll this fall to find out which idea is most popular. Then the city will execute the projects in 2019.
