Friday, six men and women took an oath to help people in the city to the best of their ability as officers. Family and friends watched as each newly sworn-in officer received their badges at Common Council Chambers in City Hall.

After the ceremony, it was time to celebrate and take pictures. The City of Poughkeepsie Police Chief says these new officers are "the cream of the crop," and went through a rigorous hiring process of tests and interviews to get to this point.

For the new officers, this ceremony is a big achievement, and say they're excited for this opportunity.

"What really intrigues me about the job is that I'm never going to be doing the same thing. Every day I'll have a new opportunity, I'll meet new people, and hopefully I'll do everything I can to help this city out and make everyone safe," said new City of Poughkeepsie Police Officer Shane Rightmeyer.

The six officers are the newest recruits, and will have to go through the Dutchess County Police Academy starting later this month. The police department also just swore in an officer two weeks ago, but that person already went through the police academy.
