POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Dutchess County authorities now say the search for a missing swimmer in the Hudson River is set to continue through Sunday.
The county sheriff's office says scuba divers suspended their underwater search Thursday afternoon, with surface and sonar efforts ending for the day around 7 p.m.
Tidal waters and the shape of the riverbed create search difficulties and divers will be sent back in if there's new sonar information.
Paul Maschitta, 49, was last seen in the water Tuesday around noon.
Officers says Maschitta went into the Hudson near Waryas Park while trying to help a swimmer struggling to stay afloat.
That swimmer was safely rescued, but Maschitta did not resurface.
The search picks back up again Friday with help from a State Park Police Marine Unit.
