A special event Saturday in Orange County brings together children with the police officers who protect their city.

The second annual cops and kids field day was heald at Fancher-Davidge Park in Middletown.

Officers played games like tug of war, egg races and capture the flag and held a barbecue for the kids ranging from kindergarten to 5th grade.

Middletown's parks and recreation program coordinator says events like these promote good community relations and send a positive message.

"Our officers are here for our community, they want to make a community safe place," says Nicole Psarakis, Program Coordinator for Middletown Parks and Recreation. "They want to make our community a place where everyone can thrive."

Some of the Middletown Police Officers who came out to have fun with the kids are actually school resource officers, recent funding will place SROs in every Middletown school beginning this upcoming school year.

85 children registered to take part in the event along with 12 Middletown police officers.
