If you're hitting the road this holiday weekend, you may be a little surprised by gas prices as you fill up your tank.

AAA says the national average gas price could be at $3 dollars or more this summer.

In New York State, the average gas price is $3.07, jumping seven cents since last week.

Memorial Day weekend gas prices are the highest since the holiday weekend in 2014, when the national average was around 60 cents higher.

But officials say Memorial Day isn't the only reason for the hike in prices.

"Currently we're seeing increasing gas prices because we're switching over to this summer blend which is more expensive to produce, as well as geo-political events like the Iranian and Venezuelan sanctions and OPEC cuts,” said AAA New York representative Tara Ricardi.

AAA says around 37 million drivers are expected to hit the roadways this weekend for what is considered the beginning of the summer driving season.
