A day after a brush fire ripped through dozens of homes at the Riversite Bungalow community, crews are working to assess the extent of the damage and clean up.

The Fallsburg Fire Company says more than 30 fire departments, along with EMS and police, came to the site along Route 42 to respond to brush and structure fires Wednesday.

Riversite is a seasonally used Hasidic community. There were some minor injuries to firefighters like heat exhaustion, but aside from that, nobody was hurt. Those who responded to the fire say the community has been very supportive, bringing in drinking water and food.

According to Sullivan County Deputy Fire Coordinator Jack Halchak, day two of the fire response is making sure the fire won’t start up again.

"Right now, it appears that we have mopped all the hotspots," Halchak said. "... There were a couple linen closets, there were towels we took care of. There was one stump and one tree right on 42 itself that we just took care of. We’re pretty confident that we’re done here."

Investigators haven’t released a cause yet, but say the heat and wind did not help in fighting the fire.
