Poughkeepsie Police have informed the city school district that the recent social media threats against Poughkeepsie High School have been found to be "without merit" -- but for another reason, the schools will remain closed Friday.

In a message from Superintendent Dr. Nicolé Williams on Thursday, the district announced that it would not be "the recent social media post, specific to the threat of a school shooting at Poughkeepsie High School," that will keep schools closed. Rather, "the forecast of impending inclement weather in the Hudson Valley" has led to the continued closure of city schools.

City police and the FBI investigated the threat made against students at the high school. One parent who spoke with Spectrum News agreed with the decision, saying that even if school wasn't closed, she would have kept her students home.

"It was very concerning, very alarming and it was scary," said Melissa Whitaker. "To think that this could possibly happen at your child's school ... you see it on the TV, you don't really think, but at the end of the day, anything can happen anywhere."

The superintendent noted that classes will resume Monday, including after-school activities.
