Anti-semitic incidents like the act of vandalism in 2016 at a local cemetery in the town of Warwick are happening at a higher rate statewide, according to the Anti-Defamation League's latest report.

The most recent report from the ADL shows that statewide incidents are up 90 percent this year compared to 2016. But Suzanne Leon from the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County says knowing how many there have been exactly in Orange County is difficult.

Earlier this month, the man accused of defacing the Beth Shalom cemetery, Eric Carbonaro, pleaded guilty to felony charges related to the incident.

"Unfortunately, there aren't good mechanisms locally to track incidents of anti-Semitism, but we know that they exist," said Leon, the Jewish Federation's executive director. "Because when something happens, our office is notified."

While the district attorney's office is seeking six months in prison and five years of probation for Carbonaro, the rabbi at Temple Beth Shalom Rebecca Shinder wants a sentence that focuses on learning and community service instead of punishment. Carbonaro will be sentenced in May.
