POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Administrators with the Poughkeepsie City School District canceled classes for all grade levels Wednesday and Thursday after authorities were alerted to an apparent shooting threat on social media.

The threat was directed toward Poughkeepsie High School, but administrators made the decision to close school for the entire district out of "an abundance of caution."

"Please be assured every threat is taken seriously," Superintendent Nicole Williams said in a statement. "Immediate action has been taken. We are working closely with the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the FBI. The safety of our staff and students is our number one priority."

The threat was posted on social media sometime Tuesday, before being reported to district administrators on Tuesday evening.

The person who made the threat first posted a stock photo of five guns, and asked Poughkeepsie High School students to "take your pick, because I'm coming for you..."

The author also posted a list of 10 people, who the author said would be the "first 10 to go."

Poughkeepsie Board of Education President Felicia Watson told Spectrum News she was proud of the several students who noticed and reported the threat on Tuesday evening.

"We were able to get ahead of this because of the students, and [them] giving us information," said Dr. Watson.

Dr. Watson said district officials were meeting with the FBI and police on Wednesday afternoon about how to approach the school day on Thursday, before deciding to cancel classes and activities for the second straight day.

"Please be assured that every threat is taken seriously until law enforcement informs us otherwise," Dr. Watson said in a text message on Thursday evening. "We are working closely with the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the FBI as they are the authorities continuing to investigate the recent social media post regarding the threat of a school shooting at Poughkeepsie High School."

Spectrum News is awaiting responses from Poughkeepsie Police and the FBI to requests for information on whether a suspect has been identified, or if anyone has been arrested in connection to the threat.
