ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Federal officials are hoping to make it easier for you to get help, when you or a loved one get sick.

Senator Chuck Schumer says the U.S. could lose more than 100,000 physicians by 2030.

He's pushing for legislation that will bring more doctors to smaller hospitals like Arnot Ogden Medical Center.

The Physican Shortage Act of 2017 will add 15,000 more medical residency positions for doctors.

Arnot Health said it's critical to provide quality health services to the community.

"We have to focus on smaller healthcare systems such as ours, not just in upstate New York, but throughout the country to train more doctors," said Richard Terry, Arnot Health's graduate medical education director. "Because as I said, the key -- train them, retain them."

Senator Schumer hopes this legislation passes this year.
