AUSTIN, Texas – A SWAT standoff in Southeast Austin ended with the suspect dead on Monday evening after he refused to drop his weapon, according the Austin Police chief.

Seven officers fired their weapon at the suspect at the 4900 block of Edge Creek Drive and all will be placed on administrative leave as the shooting is under investigation.

The situation with the suspect, who has not been identified at this time, began at 5:31 p.m. in the 3300 block of Parker Lane when police responded to a confrontation between roommates. The suspect managed to follow the victims of the confrontation to the 4800 block of Nuckols Crossing Road in a taxi cab.

The victims reported to the police that the suspect was armed. The suspect stole the cab when police attempted a traffic stop and the driver got out of the vehicle.  

The suspect then drove the vehicle to the 4900 block of Edge Creek Drive in an attempt to flee police. At 6 p.m. the officers tried to get him out of the vehicle. The suspect was threatening to shoot himself.

He also pulled the gun multiple times on the officers at the scene, according the Police Chief Brian Manley.

Just befor 7 p.m., the officers fired when the suspect refused to drop his weapon despite being told multiple times by officers. Manley said that video from an officer's body camera confirms the event.

Manley also reported that there were earlier calls of a kidnapping relating to the suspect. The shooting and the events that led to it are under investigation at this time.
