SCHERTZ, Texas – Interstate 35 at Schwab Road was shut down for hours following a standoff on the freeway on Monday evening causing traffic to back up for 11 miles in both directions.

The standoff ended when a suspect, who the New Braunfels Police Department was pursuing, surrendered. The suspect's car, police and SWAT vehicles blocked the freeway in both directions just before 9 p.m.

A SWAT officer shot a beanbag at the suspect’s window and was taken into custody shortly after.

Authorities have yet to say way led to the standoff, but it began with a police pursuit in New Braunfels. Several agencies worked together to get the suspect to surrender.

The freeway was blocked for nearly three hours with it reopened after 10 p.m.
