NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. — A family with historic ties to Stewart International Airport does not approve of plans to rename the airport, as the Port Authority moves on with the proposal.

Port Authority Commissioners authorized their executive director to continue with the renaming initiative Thursday.

This comes as part of a larger revamping project at Stewart, with commissioners also approving a $30 million U.S. Customs Inspection area.

According to Port Authority documents, Archie Stewart advocated for the donation of family land to help create an airport in 1930.

In an email, his grandson touched on the topic, saying:

"We thought we had put a stake through its heart when Governor Patterson announced that the name would remain Stewart International Airport for the remainder of the then 93 year lease. and had that language specifically inserted into the lease document article 5. Worse, the proposed name, New York International Airport at Stewart Field is far too long to show up on concourse monitors and many signs, so the Stewart Field portion will quickly be dropped. "
