Wednesday's tragic events in Florida put safety in public places on everyone's mind, and the Orange County Sheriff's Office has a program in place to help many be prepared.

The sheriff's office provides active shooter and hostile event preparation training for local businesses, schools and houses of worship in Orange County. During these events, they will evaluate structures for safety protocols, review procedures and provide a presentation to groups on how to reduce risk and protect themselves.

Officials say the goal of these programs is to help reduce panic in the event that something does happen, and give the community resources to help in the case of emergency. In addition to training, the sheriff's department says the public can also play a part in preventing tragedy by reporting behavior that seems suspicious.

"You're going to be mentally prepared, you are going to be able to respond accordingly," said Assistant Undersheriff Anthony Weed, "and you're gonna be able to safely and effectively get out of the situation."

Trainings are also held for the general public every other month, and are announced on the Sheriff's Facebook page.
