Four state police troops are putting an aerial drone program into service this month.

The machine will be used for disaster response and traffic safety, among other uses.

Troopers said using a drone will save a lot of money, instead of using a manned aircraft.

It will give New York State Police a faster response time, and make their operations more efficient. They said it can be a safer method than putting troopers in harm's way.

"It can be used for a multitude of things, drownings, things of that nature," said State Police Planning and Research Department Captain Scott Reichel. "It's just another way to get a camera, another eye when we may not be able to do it."

State police said by April, there will be 14 more drones deployed through New York State.
