WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. -- Voters in the village of Wappingers Falls will decide the fate of their police department during a special vote Tuesday.

Last year, the village board passed a referendum that would allow the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office to take over policing duties for the village.

The public's vote was originally set for November, but was pushed back to allow officials more time to become compliant with various laws that would allow the transfer of jurisdiction.

Village Mayor Matt Alexander says the transfer of services will release a $600,000 financial strain.

However, one police official says the amount it will save taxpayers isn't significant enough to justify the reduction of community policing.

Polls are open for registered voters until 9 p.m.
