A remembrance ceremony was held Monday for those lost in the Oswego lighthouse tragedy 75 years ago.

On December 4, 1942, a boat carrying eight members of the Coast Guard overturned during a storm by the Oswego Lighthouse. Six men died, and two survived.

A bell was sounded at 10:25 a.m. Monday, the exact time of the accident. A wreath was also taken out to the scene.

The Coast Guard says ever since that accident, they not only remember those who were lost, but they also use the tragedy as a lesson.

"They'd change out the watch out there and they've done it for years before that. And what happens is you can take a relatively easy mission, and when you lose the engine on the boat and you lose the anchor line, things can turn dangerous very quickly," said Senior Chief Officer Jeff Scully of the U.S. Coast Guard Station Oswego.
