NATIONWIDE — The first and last supermoon of the year is coming.

On Dec. 3 the moon will appear about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter in the night sky.

The moon is only considered a supermoon when a full moon coincides with what is called perigee, the point when the moon's orbit is the closest in its to the earth.

The best time to see the supermoon is when it rises and sets. Times vary by city and can be found here.

Although this is the first (and last) supermoon of 2017, two other supermoons will appear on Jan. 1 2018 and Jan 31, 2018.
