Three families have been displaced after a fire inside a home in Amsterdam. Jaclyn Cangro reports.

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- For the second time in two weeks, a fire has destroyed a home on Guy Park Avenue in Amsterdam.

Fire officials say the fire was stubborn, and that their attack was all defensive.

When crews arrived around 6:15 Tuesday morning, they say the back of the building was fully involved, which explains the significant damage done to the roof.

According to the Amsterdam fire chief, the second floor had been separated into two units. He says one family had to break through that wall to get out. But luckily everyone did.

In all, 13 people made it out of the home.  That includes children between the ages of 1 to 10 years old. Already, donations have begun to pour in.

“I have children of my own and I know what it’s like. It’s near the holiday season and they just lost everything. They have nothing now. They need as much support from the community as possible,” said Michelle Taylor, a neighbor.

The American Red Cross is also assisting, but one of the families says they are still in need of children’s clothing and shoes. There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
