RALEIGH -- Wake County Schools officials say they are currently conducting a special inspection on 106 of their buses.

The move comes after recent fires in Charlotte-Mecklenburg school buses and an advisory by the Department of Public Instruction.

DPI says the advisory for one school bus model is a reminder for inspectors to look for a known issue when doing their required inspections.

The buses affected have Caterpillar engines and were built between 1998 and 2003.

"This is not something that's a new issue,” said Drew Elliot with the N.C. Dept. of Public Instruction. “It's something that we've known about for years and we did want to highlight it to inspectors so when they do their 30 day inspections, as they're required to by law, they can look for this issue and know that it’s been an issue around the state."

Officials say even with the problems with some buses, they are still the safest transportation for getting students to and from school.
