KINGSTON, N.Y. -- The new Salzmann East and West Wing additions to Kingston High School are officially open.

The wings are part of a KHS renovation project worth over $137 million.

The space includes modernized classrooms, as well as departmental workspaces.

The whole project is not complete yet, but the opening of the wings marks a significant step in the timeline of construction.

While the superintendent says the project will be the start of the future. The board of education president says even with all the change, they're preserving history.

"We've been working with the state historic preservation organization and also friends of historic Kingston came through and we're saving portions of it and incorporating it into the new design,” said Kingston City School District Board of Education President Nora Scherer.

The class of 2018, who were freshman when the project began --- will be able to benefit from the new space after years of construction.

The art department and health offices are slated for renovation in 2020.
