NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo tweeted Tuesday that the crew involved in Monday's deadly plane crash in Mississippi was based out of Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh.

According to a Marine spokesman, 15 Marines and 1 Navy Corpsman were killed in the C-130 wreck in a soybean field in rural Mississippi. A source has confirmed to Spectrum News that nine of the 16 dead were stationed at Stewart.

It is still not known what caused the refueling tanker to crash into the field about 85 miles north of Jackson around 4 p.m. Monday on its way from North Carolina to California.

Marine Corps officials say they operated the plane, but hasn't said where the flight originated from or where it was going.
