NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Nearly 1,900 students received their degrees at SUNY New Paltz Sunday as 1,870 undergraduate students made up the graduating class.

1988 graduate Regina Calcaterra delivered the commencement address.

New Windsor native Margaret Hack was named valedictorian and delivered the address for her fellow undergraduates.

Students and parents said the day is somewhat bittersweet.

"It took a lot to get here, and it's a pretty incredible feeling that after all of this time I'm finally here," graduate Jeannette Sanchez said.

"It's finally coming to a close, and I'm going to miss a lot of my friends here, but yeah, I'm excited to move on," graduate Alexandra Verso said.

"They're always special, it's just the highlight of the day for all of our graduates, for all of their families," SUNY New Paltz President Donald Christian said. "I think for our students to be doing so well in a challenging era for public higher education is a really good sign."

522 graduate students received their degrees on Friday.
