KIRYAS JOEL, N.Y. -- Federal agents raided the Public Safety Building and the United Talmudical Academy in Kiryas Joel on Thursday.
Authorities spent most of the morning and afternoon at those two locations, before leaving with computers and boxes. No word yet on what exactly the agents were looking for.
The Orange County District Attorney's Office and the Sheriff's Office are both assisting in the investigation, but referred questions to the FBI. A spokeswoman for the federal agency would only say an investigation is underway in the village.
A member of the Sullivan County District Attorney's office was also spotted at the public safety building.
Those leaving the school say they were also unsure why the FBI was there. A public relations firm, which represents Kiryas Joel, says it is withholding comments until fully assessing the situation.
The raids come just a week after a video was leaked, showing the principal at the school allegedly making inappropriate contact with a boy. State police say they are continuing to investigate that video.
But for now, the purpose of the raid is still unclear.
