SHANDAKEN, N.Y. -- The two men who died late Sunday night in a car crash in the town of Shandaken were active New York City police officers.

John Martinez, who lives on Long Island, rented a 2018 Maserti and was likely the one driving on Oliveria Road when the car went off the road, hit a tree, and flipped, according to State Police.

Troopers said Martinez and a passenger, fellow NYPD officer Michael Colangelo, also from Long Island, were both partially ejected from the car and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Colangelo was just married over the weekend at Full Moon Resort, about a mile from the crash.

A third passenger was taken to Albany Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries to his head. Police had a short interview with him about what happened but say they will talk more with him after he is treated.

Troopers did not say yet what caused the car to leave the road, but say the driver was speeding on the 40 mile-per-hour winding road. They also determined the NYPD officers were not wearing seatbelts, but the man who survived the crash was.  They are continuing the investigation.
