Fire departments around New York not only put out fires, but provide emergency medical services for communities. In fact, the Fireman's Association of New York says some departments are answering more ambulance calls than fire calls. And that comes at a cost. So lawmakers are considering allowing them to bill patients' insurance plans, which private ambulance companies already do.
