SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Mike Hopkins is leaving the Syracuse University men's basketball staff to take the job as head coach at the University of Washington.

Hopkins came to SU in 1989 as a player, then returned to spend 20-plus seasons as assistant coach and was set to take over as head coach at after Coach Jim Boeheim retires, which was presumably after the 2018 season.

Hopkins was an integral part of four Final Four teams, including the 2003 national championship.

Hopkins released the following statement about the move:

"I can't express enough thanks to Coach Boeheim for so many years of mentorship and guidance," Hopkins said. "The timing is right for me and my family to make this move."

Hopkins will be the 19th head coach for the University of Washington.
