The Friday Night Matchup was between a pair of teams fighting for a two-seed and a home field advantage in sectionals. The contest between F-M and West Genesee had a playoff feel on Homecoming night on the Hornets' home turf, but it was the Wildcats earning the 35-24 victory.

The Wildcats struck first in hostile territory with a touchdown catch by Chandler McAvan. The Hornets didn’t take long to answer. Their drive ended with a 3-yard run by senior Tim Shaw. It was a whiteout for Hall of Fame night, so the fans who packed the stands loved the quick response.

The offense for both teams stalled out in the second quarter, but a costly turnover led to a West Genesee touchdown to end the half.

At halftime, former F-M coach and SU star Damien Rhodes was inducted into the Hornets Hall of Fame.

In the second half, the Hornets took a lead thanks to another short score by Shaw. Heading into the fourth quarter, it felt like F-M had the momentum with a 24-21 lead. The Wildcats, though, weren’t fazed by the packed house at Hornets Stadium. They came out firing in the fourth quarter and fired off 14 unanswered points to take the game.

Tyler Cook was the player of the game with three touchdowns and nearly 300 yards.

"We haven’t done this in a while. We’re bringing pride back to West Genesee," Cook said after the game.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 5-1 while the Hornets fell to 4-2. Next week, the Wildcats will take on RFA while F-M will battle with B’Ville.

Next week’s Friday Night Matchup features a Class B clash between Oneida and V-V-S, which will be live on Spectrum News.
