SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse got their first conference win and improved to 3-0 on the season with a 30-7 home victory over Florida State (1-2) Saturday.

The first half was a defensive battle. The Orange kept the Seminoles off the scoreboard through two quarters. A pair of chip-shot field goals by by freshman Andre Szmyt gave Syracuse a 6-0 lead at the break.

The Syracuse offense came alive in the second half. Quarterback Tommy Devito, playing in relief of an injured Eric Dungey, scored on a 3-yard run midway through the third and three minutes later, Devito connected with Ravian Pierce from 3 yards out to give Syracuse a 20-0 lead.

Florida State finally got on the scoreboard with six minutes left in the game when Deondre Francois scored from 2 yards out.

Syracuse cushioned their lead when senior running back Dontae Strickland scored a 13-yard touchdown run. That gave the Orange a 30-7 lead, which would ultimately be the final score.

It was Syracuse's first win versus Florida State since 1966 and they dominated nearly every facet of the game. They had more total yards (441-240), won the turnover battle (1-0), dominated time of possession (36:51-23:08) and held the Seminoles to just 11 first downs.

Syracuse will look to stay unbeaten when they host UCONN next Saturday at 4 p.m.
