PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The Bills are going into their second preseason game in much the same way as the first, with mystery surrounding who will start at quarterback.

As head coach Sean McDermott keeps the decision in-house, the three fighting for the job ready for the next step in the competition.

"Just to go out there and execute, like I said,” Nathan Peterman said. “No matter what group I'm with, I'm going to go play my best, protect the football, and lead the team down and score."

"I don't pay attention anybody else, I just compete with myself day in and day out and that's the way I've always been,” AJ McCarron said. “I try and keep mental clutter out and I just focus on myself and have fun and play."

"You just have to trust the process,” Josh Allen said. “Coach always preaches that. I'm just trying to learn, get better every day from Nate and AJ, learn from coach Daboll. At the end of the day that's all it's about. I'm trying to become the best quarterback I can be and it's going to take time."

All week it's been Peterman and McCarron alternating days with the first team while Josh Allen's been solely leading the second unit. McDermott's pleased with what he's seen to date, even though it hasn't brought about any separation.

"All three have certainly had their moments, good and bad. The great parts about these young men is that they're learning from the ones that haven't gone their way,” McDermott said. “As we continue to grow as a football team, they're continuing to grow at the quarterback position as well."

Allen is already drawing the attention of one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, but not in a positive way.

Jaguars Jalen Ramsey called the rookie "trash" in a GQ article, categorizing the Bills’ selection of him seventh overall as "a stupid draft pick."

Allen took the high road when becoming aware of Ramsey's comments.

"That's the first I've heard of it. He's not on my team. He's not my teammate. It don't bother me,” Allen said. “I don't care. It doesn't bother me one bit. I care about my teammates, what my teammates think of me. When I step on the field ultimately I'm trying to win football games and trying to be the best quarterback for this team as possible."

Bills head to Cleveland for their second preseason game Friday night.
