ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Bills wide receiver Jordan Matthews was clearly in good spirits Monday as the team hit the practice field following the bye week. Head coach Sean McDermott says Matthews made “tremendous amount of progress” and has a chance to return to the lineup on Sunday against Tampa Bay after thumb surgery kept him out of the Bengals game.

“I want to play.  I want to play as early as possible, but the coaches and the trainers want me to be smart,” Matthews said. “They've been taking really good care of me so at this point I'm just conditioning, continuing to stay in shape so that when I do come back that I can help this team make the run that we're trying to make.”

Matthews was at practice on a limited basis Monday. He still hasn't caught a football with his right hand since the surgery, but he's taking steps in that direction while working on his coordination and strength.”

“I'm trying to just hone in on all my other skills,” Matthews said. “My left hand, as far as catching, is my off hand so I feel like if anything this is the time for me to actually work on one of my deficiencies, so then when I do get my right hand back, I come back that much better.”

Buffalo’s passing offense sure could use a boost. The unit ranks 30th in the league in yards per game (165.0). They're missing their leading receiver with tight end Charles Clay, who is expected to be out multiple weeks with a knee injury.  Look for Nick O'Leary to fill that role moving forward.

“Every time we give him a chance to make a play catching the ball, he does,” said offensive coordinator Rick Dennison. “He did a good job in Cincinnati. He does his part, does his role. If you can count on a guy to make a play, then that's a good thing.”

As the Bills deal with their own uncertainties because of injuries, they'll face another this week from their opponent at the game's most important position. Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston left Sunday's game with an injury, and former Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick stepped in. With questions about which one will play, McDermott says they'll have a game plan for both on Sunday.

The Bills activated offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson to the 53-man roster. Henderson served a 10-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
