Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney and her Democratic challenger Anthony Brindisi are in a neck-and-neck race for the 22nd congressional district, a Spectrum News/Syracuse.com/Siena College poll found.

The poll found Brindisi, a state assemblyman, leading Tenney 46 percent to 45 percent. Tenney is seeking a second term for the district that includes parts of the Mohawk Valley, central New York and Southern Tier region.

Brindisi draws the majority of independents, 54 percent.

Brindisi has a favorability rating of 46 percent to 37 percent, while Tenney’s favorability stands at 42 percent. Forty-seven percent have an unfavorable view of her, the poll found.

There’s a stark gender and age gap in the race as well. Brindisi is supported by 51 percent of women. Male voters back Tenney’s re-election 52 percent to 41 percent. Tenney, too, has the support of voters under the age of 55, receiving support from just over half of those voters.

Despite the favorability problems, voters in the district are supportive of Republicans maintaining control of the House of Representatives, with 53 percent preferring the GOP retain its majority. At the same time, 53 percent of voters polled approve of the job President Donald Trump is doing, compared to 43 percent who do not.

The poll of 501 likely voters was conducted from Oct. 15 to Oct. 22. It has a margin of error of 4.7 percentage points.
