Across the state of New York, affordable housing options have been seen more frequently than ever. In Rome, a new affordable option is coming for area residents.

New drawings for the Dewitt Clinton Apartments were displayed to the public Wednesday night at an informational meeting.

The $25 million complex will house two apartment buildings: one with 66 units towering three stories high and another, town-house like apartment housing 14 units sitting at two stories high.

"There is a lot going on here right now, so we are excited about it,” said Gillian Conde, vice president of DePaul Properties of Rochester, who is spearheading the project with New York State’s Homes & Community Renewal Program.

The apartment complex was once the Dewitt Clinton Elementary School, built in 1924. Longtime Rome homeowner Kathy Pedde says she is sad to see the school torn down, but knows the future of the space is bright.

"I went there; I lived in that neighborhood for 30 years,” said Pedde. "I think that it will be such a big improvement especially to that area."

The DeWitt Clinton Apartments are currently starting at $600 for a one person unit and topping out at $875 for a four person.

Rome Mayor Jackie Izzo is on board with the project and believes this affordable housing will help the city

"As far as the apartments are concerned we have a real need in the city for the more modern style apartments and the townhouses will be mid market rate,” said Izzo. “I think there will probably be a waiting list once this whole thing gets started."
