It's a topic not everyone is comfortable talking about, but International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is raising awareness.

The day is all about getting people impacted by suicide together to lean on one another.

UHS in Binghamton hosted a gathering for the first time this year. The event helps people start a discussion, share stories, and learn new ways to cope.

Organizers encourage people to be more open when talking about suicide.

"I think one of the biggest things is finding that support, reaching out being able to share your experiences or be with someone else that has lived through the experience as well. Its conversations and knowing that you're not alone," said Broome County Health Community Systems Coordinator Heidi Mikeska.

According to The American Foundation for Suicide prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the country.
