A Utica resident is facing charges after allegedly shooting a deer with a bow in the city.
A complaint from October 29 claims a deer was seen in a driveway with an arrow sticking out of it. A DEC officer responded and found tufts of deer hair in the driveway.
The homeowner brought the officer to the basement, where the hindquarters were hanging. The seven-point buck's head was in the freezer, along with packages of meat from a separate deer that was allegedly not reported.
Joseph Witte, 31, is facing a number of charges, including a couple of misdemeanors.
With hunting season underway, the DEC wants people to keep the law in mind. Here are a few tips:
- Hunting with bait or over a baited area is illegal
- Trespassing is illegal
- Hunting on or from any public road is illegal
- Know proper firearm safety practices
