Nearly 100 people gathered on Friday at Syracuse University's annual Rose Laying Ceremony, to remember the victims of the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 terrorist attack.

This year’s ceremony was held as part of Remembrance Week, marking the 30th anniversary of the tragedy.

The community gathered to honor the 270 people who were killed in the bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, where 35 Syracuse University students were among the victims killed.

The convocation recognized those students and the scholars who are studying in their honor.

Relatives of the victims said keeping the memory of their loved ones alive is an important part in the grieving process.

"That these remarkable students not only remember the 35 Syracuse students but all 270 of the victims [helps] their legacy live on. Their writings, their drawings, their works of art, can still touch generations that weren't alive," said Cara Weipz, the sister of one of the victims, Richard Monetti.

The official anniversary date is on December 21.
