For the first time in six years, Watertown has hired new firefighters, and the move could ease tensions between the department and the city.

With funding from a SAFER grant, four firefighters have joined the team, starting their first week with the department. This federal grant pays some of the salaries and benefits for the new additions.

They come at a crucial time for the department as a long standing battle with the city over staffing and overtime numbers continues.

"Overtime has been right through the roof,” said Watertown Fire Chief Dale Herman. “Having four people with their salaries and benefits being compensated at the federal level does enhance saving and having the people working will reduce over time."

The new firefighters will finish training in mid-January.
