Residents in the Southern Tier woke up to their first snowfall of the season.

Video was captured by the National Weather Service in Johnson City.

While it may have only been some light flurries, a small amount of snow briefly coated the ground.

And with temperatures in the 30s, many had to scrape the ice off their windshields before making that morning commute.

Broome County's highway department had 10 trucks on standby.

This is the earliest many remember preparing for the winter season.

"The earliest that I really recall being out doing it was Halloween time. We’ve had storms at that time but not this early  in October,” said Mark Quail, Broome County Highway General Foreman.

Preperation typically begins at the end of October.

"We have a day where we just have all of our people in here and we go through everything, every aspect of the sanders, and the spreaders, the plows and wings, and we review a lot of stuff with our drivers as to what we should and shouldn’t be doing out there," said Quail.

Luckily, it looks like some sunshine and warmer temperatures are on the way Friday.
