According to the International Journal of Cancer, eating things like bacon, ham or lunch meat can cause breast cancer.

"There are always studies being done about everything related to nutrition and it can be really overwhelming for people to know what to believe and what not to believe," said April Bennett, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Nutrition Area program Manager.

There are two main reasons why processed meats can cause breast cancer:

1) Additives: Additives are substances added to food to make them last longer. Additives can link to cancer because these substances contain chemicals and hormones that are cancers risks.

2) Nitrates: Nitrates are an organic company of nitric acid, or salt. Nitrates can link to cancer because too much nitrate exposure can cause blood problems, which is harmful to the body.

It is why nutrition experts say the key to reducing risks is simply, a healthy diet. Nutritionists say the best way to avoid this is by eating organic and fresh produce.

“There are some steps that we can all take to help ourselves be proactive against breast cancer,” said Bennett. “Things like eating lots of fruits and vegetables."

You should also know your family health history because some people are genetically more prone to certain breast cancer.

"The more strong history you have the earlier that the doctor can begin to screen for it,” said Samaritan Medical Center Registered dietitian Teresa Intorcia. “So just making sure in general that you're communicating with your caregivers."
