New counsel and a new sentencing date has been set for the man charged with killing three young people last winter in an Onondaga drunk driving crash.

Anthony Saccone, appeared in court for the third time this month — this time with new counsel, after firing his initial attorney.

Sentencing was initially scheduled for Friday.

"There needs to be an attorney so the case can move through the process, so you're not standing here without an attorney," said Onondaga County Court Judge Matthew Doran.

"I'm looking for one ... I'm trying my best, your honor. It's a process. I rushed right into Sullivan because he was recommended by Fitzpatrick's wife over here, thinking he might be a good lawyer for the case, but as it turns out, he wasn't, obviously," said Saccone.

"It's obvious to me that the defendant is in a state of denial that he's just going to come in here Friday without an attorney. I'm going to have three families here who are waiting to address the court and that's not fair. That's just not fair to them," said Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick.

Prosecutors moved for the court to appoint an attorney on Wednesday. He hoped to avoid delay, but Doran gave Saccone until Friday to retain a new lawyer.

"I also don't see what the rush is, considering you guys have me jail regardless, obviously," Saccone said. "Similar cases have been stretched out over two years."

"That may be true, but this is not going to be stretched out past Friday," the judge responded.

A new sentencing date was set for November 7.
