It is a bittersweet rescue for Raven and her pups.
"It makes me feel like that person doesn't have a heart,” said SPCA Foster Parent Brittany Conklin. “I mean to leave a mamma dog and puppies on the side of the road. Puppies can't fend for themselves in a pillow case. We lost one out of the bunch. But it could have been a lot more tragic."
When Brittany Conklin heard the news, there was no hesitation to help foster the family of dogs.
"This is my way of giving back to the community,” said Conklin. “Being able to take in strays make them better and then find them forever homes."
The traumatic experience seems to have impacted Raven who was left to fend for her puppies on the side of a road.
"She's very nervous and just anxious,” said Conklin. “And a lot of it has to do with things changing. I'm sure every time she gets in to a car she's expecting to be dumped off somewhere now at this point."
"It's very disheartening to know that somebody would do something like that," said SPCA employee Amy Wonderly.
But now that they're inside of a warm home with food, water and attention the family is on the road to recovery.
"She's doing quite well,” said Conklin. “Puppies have been doing great. Eat, drink, sleep and that's about it."
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office started an investigation and they're asking anyone with information as to how those puppies got on the side of the road, to reach out.
