LOUISVILLE, Ky – Flu season is right around the corner and Kentuckians should be mindful of certain behaviors in order to lower your chances of getting sick. Good hand washing and proper hygiene can go a long way, but there are other everyday items that should get a good wipe down too.

1. Cell phones: Cell phones are a hot spot for germs. We touch them with our hands all the time and transfer bacteria onto them. Augusta University Health Researchers say in most cases cell phones carries 10 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. Use a microfiber cloth often to clean your phone. The friction alone wipes out a lot of germs. Another way to wipe it down is with water and rubbing alcohol solution.

2. Buttons: They are everywhere when you are out and about in public. Watch out for elevator buttons, ATM keypads, and buttons when you use your debit and credit card. Remember to use hand sanitizer after coming in contact with them.

3. Dish sponges: Sponges can get gross fast because of all the things cooked up in a typical kitchen. Toss your sponge in the dishwasher regularly and replace them often.

4. Shopping carts and reusable grocery bags: Use the wipes the store provides to clean the handle. Get into the habit of washing your reusable bags regularly.

5. Remote controls: Same problems phones have. Doctors recommend an alcohol wipe to take care of the bacteria.

6. Cutting boards: Put plastic boards in the dishwasher and hand wash the hardwood boards.

7. Sink faucets and fridge handles: Make sure you give these items the wipe down during your cleaning days.
