A 12-year-old child died at the hospital hours after shots were fired Wednesday night in Syracuse's Washington Square neighborhood.

James Springer III is the second child who died from gun violence in the past week. He was a 6th grader at Grant Middle School.

Officers responded to a shooting call at Park Street and East Division Street around 9:35 p.m., and en route were notified James was being transported in a private vehicle to nearby St. Joseph's Hospital.

Shot in the abdomen, James was then transferred to Upstate University Hospital, where around 3 a.m., he died.

A 33-year-old woman was also taken to the hospital, but police said she will recover from a grazing from a bullet. Police said the investigation so far determined the victims were on the 100 block of John Street when they were shot. What wasn't immediately known was the relationship of the two shooting victims.

Police Chief Frank Fowler says there were issues in that neighborhood that officials weren’t aware of, but if someone called and let officers know ahead of time, they could have intervened and possibly saved this 12-year-old’s life.
