The latest scam is targeting people looking to buy or rent a new home.

Realtors say if you're looking for a house, you need to do your homework first.

Criminals will try to undersell listed houses on sites like Craigslist.

Experts say bring the application to a lawyer if it looks unusual and never give out your social security number or banking information.

They also advise people to give their money only when they receive the keys.

And if the person lives overseas, don't risk it.

"If you see it on Craigslist, look on Realtor.com, Zillow, call your real estate agent," said Shelley Hoffman, a Re/Max Masters real estate salesperson. "But a licensed real estate agent can look it up and verify the information for you, either if it is for rent or it's not for rent. But you need to do your research. If it looks too good to be true, it most likely is."

Realtors say this type of scam happens more often than you think, so always remain vigilant.
