SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse University says a student has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.
The student is not on campus currently, but it is unclear how long they were there while infected.
The student is being treated at a hospital near their hometown.
According to the CDC, meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
The university says upon learning about the diagnosis, it notified students who live with the infected student or may have come in contact with them.
Antibiotics are being administered to those who have had close contact with the infected student.
The university says it's in "close communication" with the Onondaga County Health Department and the New York state Department of Health.
