Five upstate New York counties are getting extra funding to combat severe weather and climate change.

Albany County, Sullivan County and Orange County will each be getting a grant of $1 million.

The goal of that money is to develop resiliency plans to better prepare for and recover from severe weather events.

The funding is part of the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Initiative that was started after Superstorm Sandy left devastation in the state.

Several upstate communities have seen more severe storms that cause flooding, storm surges and ice jams.
