SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse City School District launches changes to bolster school security during a public hearing Monday evening.

This year’s plan focuses on action-based responses to dilemmas, which safety officials say limits the anxiety surrounding these conversations.

The safety plans get revisited annually to stay up to date with state and federal protocols, as well as shifting concerns in schools.

Even with all of this planning, officials understand that you can't always prepare for a disaster.

"To me, the safety net is to make sure staff and students are properly trained so that they personally feel comfortable that they can respond in the time of a tragedy,” said Thomas Ristoff, the director of public safety for Syracuse City School District.

The Syracuse City School District will also be adding random metal detection days at middle schools.
