Fortunately, the impact to our region is not expected to be that great from Hurricane Florence. But some experts believe there will be many more hurricanes like it in the future.

Hurricane season begins in June because the storms are fueled by warmer weather.

An earth science professor from Syracuse University points to global warming, and warns that hurricanes will continue to get stronger every year.

"Living in a world where greenhouses gases are increasing, so there's a strong upward trend in global temperatures," said Syracuse University Earth Science Professor Dr. Tripti Bhattacharya. "But that has important regional impacts on hurricanes. So we know that the potential intensity of storms tends to increase as the climate warms. So in the future, we are likely to see stronger storms."
