COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- As a new hurricane barrels towards the Atlantic Coast, people living in Puerto Rico are still recovering from the one that devastated their island last year.

Now, some employees from Bassett Medical Center are on their way to help.

"Here I am now, 40-plus years into my nursing career, and have the humble privilege of being able to do this," said Anna Buell, a registered nurse.

They're part of a group that will provide pediatric and general medical care as well as PTSD counseling.

The trip was organized through the United Methodist Church Volunteers in Mission.

Bassett Medical Center is also helping. They’ve already sent medical supplies down including stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs and glucose monitors.

"We’re not there to impose anything. We’re there to find out what’s needed," said Celeste Johns, the chief of psychiatry at the Bassett Medical Center. "As a psychiatrist, I don’t know how much psychiatry I’ll actually be doing. I may be doing more checking of glucose monitors and writing prescriptions for needed medications."

They know conditions will be far from ideal.

"We know that electricity has only recently been restored. We know that many houses are in need of repair. We know that there is no functioning hospital, and that some of the roads need considerable work. That’s as much as we know right now," Johns said.

The group is heading down on September 22, and will spend a week in Esperanza.
