GEDDES, N.Y. -- Students were chopping away at the second annual Timber Sports and Forestry Experience Day at the state fair.

The goal of the each year is to teach fairgoers about the timber industry and forestry.

College lumberjack teams face off in different logging techniques, including the crosscut, underhand chop, axe throw and more. But the real purpose is to teach the history and importance of logging in the state. as well as managing forests for future generations.

New York has the most forestland in the Northeast -- 19 million acres of it is devoted to the timber industry.
